  • Research Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, Division of Clinical Pharmacology, NYU School of Medicine

Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Fu is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at NYU.  He is co-Director of the Evidence-Based Medicine Information Retrieval and Scientometrics Laboratory (EIRSL) in the Center for Health Informatics and Bioinformatics (CHIBI).  Before coming to NYU, he studied Computer Science as an undergraduate at Princeton University and completed his PhD in Biomedical Informatics at Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Fu's current research interests include information retrieval, machine learning, and scientometrics.  The main focus of his work is the development of improved evaluation methods for the literature using machine learning methods.  He has published the first paper that demonstrates the feasibility of predicting long term citation counts for biomedical articles using only information available at the time of publication.  His future work includes plans to generalize the models and deploy them in real-world applications.  Other work includes developing models to automatically differentiate between instrumental and non-instrumental citations which is another first in the literature of scientometrics.  Such models, among other uses, enable the creation of modified versions of existing citation metrics (i.e., impact factor or citation count) that ignore non-instrumental citations and are potentially more accurate in identifying high-quality articles.
