Phillip Ross Smith, Ph.D., M.D.

Associate Professor, Department of Cell Biology, NYU School of Medicine

Dr. Smith obtained his PhD in High Energy Physics from the University of Cambridge, UK, then moved to the University of Canterbury, NZ, to complete postdoctoral study in Medical Imaging. He then moved to the Department of Microbiology in the Biozentrum of the University of Basel, CH, eventually joining the faculty as a Privat Dozent. In 1986 he graduated with an MD from NYU and after internship at Cornell returned to NYU as a member of the faculty.

Dr. Smith has broad research interests and over 70 publications in peer-reviewed journals. Much of his publication record is in the area of electron microscopical structure determination and he has been a managing editor of three special issues of the Journal of Structural Biology covering software tools in this field, his particular area of research interest. More recently he has been involved with the development of software to create quizzes for medical students. These have been used for the past six years in several courses and exams at the SoM and papers describing the software and its use have been published in several journals. His most recent project is the development of display software to facilitate the analysis of ChIP-Seq experiments and the analysis of protein transcription.

Dr. Smith has had significant administrative responsibilities. He was the Interim CIO for the School of Medicine at the inception of that role, and has been the Associate Program Director for Informatics for the GCRC for over ten years. He has been a charter member of the BCHI NIH study section and continues to serve as a reviewer of informatics projects for NIH and the NCRR.

Currently Dr. Smith is serving as Operations Director for the CHIBI/NYULMC High Performance Computing Facility, is co-leading the effort to capture research needs for the NYULMC Federated Data Warehouse Project, and serves as Scientific Content Editor for the CTSI web presence.
